    Majorana Quasi-Particles Protected by Z2\mathbb{Z}_2 Angular Momentum Conservation

    We show how angular momentum conservation can stabilise a symmetry-protected quasi-topological phase of matter supporting Majorana quasi-particles as edge modes in one-dimensional cold atom gases. We investigate a number-conserving four-species Hubbard model in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. The latter reduces the global spin symmetry to an angular momentum parity symmetry, which provides an extremely robust protection mechanism that does not rely on any coupling to additional reservoirs. The emergence of Majorana edge modes is elucidated using field theory techniques, and corroborated by density-matrix-renormalization-group simulations. Our results pave the way toward the observation of Majorana edge modes with alkaline-earth-like fermions in optical lattices, where all basic ingredients for our recipe - spin-orbit coupling and strong inter-orbital interactions - have been experimentally realized over the last two years.Comment: 12 pages (6 + 6 supplementary material

    Multimedia digital solutions from image and range based models for ancient landscapes communication

    The paper presents the results of an interdisciplinary project which aimed at the dissemination of some archaeological remains producing multimedia contents from multisensor surveyed 3D data. The scope of this application pertained to the use of 3D detailed models as a base for some video-installations with the aim to arouse the visitors’ emotions and improve their museum experience. This work has been applied to the Arch of Augustus located in the archaeological site of Susa and to two ancient Roman marble statues, found in the city of Susa in 1802 and now displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Turin. The Arch of Augustus is in a remarkable state of conservation. Its decorated frieze tells about the peace between the Romans and the Celts but it is difficult to see for visitors at the ground level. A multisensor 3D survey, by means of laser scanning technique and photogrammetric method, made it possible to process a detailed 3D textured model, which provided the base for the creation of a life-size model to be placed in the Museum of Susa on which a designed didactic video map is projected, which explains the meaning of the frieze. The two statues, known as ‘busti loricati di Susa’ and representing two Roman emperors, were surveyed with a photogrammetric method with the aim of processing two 3D models representing the statues before the 19th century restoration, on the basis of archival sources. These models provided the base for a video installation for the museum which simulates a holographic projection and explains the different armour parts highlighting them in sequence. Nowadays modern metric survey technologies allow us to collect and process very detailed 3D models able to satisfy a wide variety of applications field, from specialized representation to didactic final uses in museums exhibitions

    APENet: LQCD clusters a la APE

    Developed by the APE group, APENet is a new high speed, low latency, 3-dimensional interconnect architecture optimized for PC clusters running LQCD-like numerical applications. The hardware implementation is based on a single PCI-X 133MHz network interface card hosting six indipendent bi-directional channels with a peak bandwidth of 676 MB/s each direction.     This paper supports the 'Hydrogeological map of the Sabatini Volcanic District'. The map provides an overview of the hydrogeological setting of the Sabatini Volcanic District, using experimental water level data integrated with former volcanological and hydrogeological studies. The 1:50,000 scale map was produced in order to provide support to local authorities and professionals working on groundwater management. Fifteen hydrogeological complexes were defined based on volcanological properties and hydrogeological conditions

    The Tropical Transition of the October 1996 Medicane in the Western Mediterranean Sea: A Warm Seclusion Event

    The processes leading to the tropical transition of the October 1996 medicane in the western Mediterranean are investigated on the basis of a 50-member ensemble of regional climate model (RCM) simulations. By comparing the composites of transitioning and nontransitioning cyclones it is shown that standard extratropical dynamics are responsible for the cyclogenesis and that the transition results from a warm seclusion process. As the initial thermal asymmetries and vertical tilt of the cyclones are reduced, a warm core forms in the lower troposphere. It is demonstrated that in the transitioning cyclones, the upper-tropospheric warm core is also a result of the seclusion process. Conversely, the warm core remains confined below 600 hPa in the nontransitioning systems. In the baroclinic stage, the transitioning cyclones are characterized by larger vertical wind shear and intensification rates. The resulting stronger low-level circulation in turn is responsible for significantly larger latent and sensible heat fluxes throughout the seclusion process

    Contained-Reflected Megaturbidites of the Marnoso-arenacea Formation (Contessa Key Bed) and Helminthoid Flysches (Northern Apennines, Italy) and Hecho Group (South-Western Pyrenees)

    Contained-reflected beds deposited by fully-ponded or partially-reflected turbidity currents are important because their correct evaluation can give important indications on the degree of basin confinement and on the type, size and orientation of the morphological obstacle. Through a detailed facies analysis of various significant megabeds in the Marnoso-arenacea Formation, including the Contessa key bed, in the helminthoid flysches in the northern Apennines (Italy) and in the Pyrenees (megaturbidite MT5), this work proposes a depositional model that is well consistent with the recent experimental data available in the literature, discussing their strengths and limits. The Contessa and flysch megabeds fit very well with the experimental conditions because they are deposited in narrow and elongated confined basins characterized by axial flows. Indeed, in the proposed model, it is possible to recognize facies deposited by: 1) a basal underflow directed towards the bounding slope (Facies A), 2) an intermediate part of the flow characterized by lateral deflections (facies B1), 3) an upper well-developed reversing flow (facies B2) and 4) an uppermost residual reversing flow recording the final collapse of the fine-grained suspended load forming a poorly-sorted slurry facies C and a very thick mudstone unit D. Facies A, B1 and B2 are usually separated by very thin fine-grained muddy drapes rich in carbonaceous matter, which can be traced throughout the basin. These drapes - very common in contained and confined beds in these settings - can be related to internal density surfaces, along which decoupling processes, separating underflows from reversing overflows, can easily occur. Conversely, as the MT5 is characterized by a source transversal to an elongated narrow basin, the large flow volume versus basin capacity hinders the generation of reversing flows and rebound layers favoring the formation of fully-ponded pulsating overflows able to deposit alternations of laminated and massive units. This facies type can be observed in the basins that are characterized by axial flows only near the basin margins where the pulsating collapse of the reversing flow can dominate. This study shows that the integration of detailed field studies are essential to validate experimental data from an applicative point of view
